Have an annoying Facebook friend whose constant status updates are constantly inundating your news feed? Well things surely became a bit easier for you with Facebook’s new and enhanced News Feed Preferences menu.
You get a list of options upon clicking it. You’ll be able to prioritize people whose stuff is most-important to you, unfollow profiles which are constantly filling your feed or re-follow them and discover new pages based on your previous page likes.
The first option allows you to remain updated with the people who matter most to you. Once you’ve selected their names, they’ll always be the first ones to show up on your news feed with a little star alongside their profiles, displaying all the content which was posted while you were away.
The second option allows you to unfollow friends whose updates you don’t want. Now, this option was available before too, but this place will allow you to unfollow people in hordes, rather than painstakingly following a tiring process. You can also follow those people whom you’ve unfollowed in the past again.
Last in the chain is “Discover New Pages” which gives you suggestions of new pages, based on your existing likes. To access the new News Feed Preferences menu, click on More option in the bottom right of your phone, and select Settings.
The feature is available on iOS starting from today and will hit Android and the Web in the coming few weeks. With it, you’ll be able to achieve a more personalized experience on Facebook, rather than just the random, haphazard stuff.
According to an insider, it is confirmed that Samsung will release the next entry in its Galaxy Note series, Samsung Galaxy Note 5, in mid-August this year at the USA. This will be a break in its tradition of releasing new entries of its premier line of phablets in the September-October period. Since the release of the first Galaxy Note in October 2011, Samsung reveals a new Galaxy Note in IFA Berlin and then releases it in late September or October of the same year.
Traditionally, Samsung’s Galaxy S series is considered to be a rival of the iPhones. However, since the release of iPhone 6 Plus, Samsung’s Note series has also been in contention. With the imminent release of iPhone’s next iterations (most probably 6S and 6S Plus), it is believed that this shift in release date is to avoid Galaxy Note 5 from coming into direct competition with the duo of 6S phones. The earlier launch will give the Note 5 some breathing room in the market before the iPhones are released in late 2015. Furthermore, the reveal is also reportedly going to be in the US (Apple’s home turf) rather than Germany this time.
Galaxy Note 4’s concurrent release with iPhone 6 last year might have prompted the change in release date. This advance in release date also comes at the heels of reduced profits from Q2 2015, compared to the same period last year. But analysts believe that was due to a mismatch between Samsung’s expected demand of Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge and the actual demand. This meant the company’s supply couldn’t match the higher than expected demand of S6 Edge.
In a move that is sparking outrage across the country, UK is pressing ahead with plans to ban all encrypted communication under stricter laws for social media and online messaging services. Major services including Whatsapp, iMessage and Snapchat could face the ban under the new rules.
The UK’s ‘Investigatory Powers Bill’ will require all ISPs, phone companies and service providers to give access to their data to the government. This will include everything you search online through Google, Facebook and Whatsapp conversations as well as Snapchat photos.
The exact scope of the Bill is still not known but that ambiguity is exactly what makes it such a breach of privacy. Everyone is well versed in vague bills, secret courts and the push for mass surveillance without any clear goal courtesy of Snowden and it would be incredibly naive of us to think it’s a harmless move.
As such, this marks another brazen attempt by a government to use tragedy to push more draconian laws that compromise security and privacy. Recently, the FBI director (who has been pushing for backdoors in major services) admitted that there is no data to back up claims that access to unencrypted communication helps thwart attacks. There are countless other examples but once again, there is a rallying cry of ‘What about the terrorists?’ to gain more control and power over the public.
The Snooper’s Charter, as it has been called by many, has plenty of opponents.
Former Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg blocked the same bill while he was in power. He said:
We have every right to invade the privacy of terrorists and those we think want to do us harm, but we should not equate that with invading the privacy of every single person in the UK. They are not the same thing.
The so-called Snoopers’ Charter is not targeted. It’s not proportionate.
It’s not harmless. It would be a new and dramatic shift in the relationship between the state and the individual.
People who blithely say they are happy for their communications to be open to scrutiny because they have ‘nothing to hide’ have failed to grasp something fundamental about open democratic societies: We do not make ourselves safer by making ourselves less free.
Liberty, which campaigns for civil liberties and human rights in the UK, said:
We take no issue with the use of intrusive surveillance powers per se – targeted surveillance can play an important part in preventing and detecting serious crime.
But the current regime just doesn’t provide sufficient safeguards to ensure that such surveillance is conducted lawfully, and in a necessary and proportionate way.
Will Pakistan Follow in Banning WhatsApp?
While the news bears no direct bearing on Pakistan, it could set up a very dangerous precedent. We know that our law enforcement agencies are tired of these encrypted messaging apps and UK’s ban on WhatsApp (and others) could see other countries following suit.
We fear that Pakistan won’t take a moment in going ahead and legislating against these encrypted apps.
Fighting against governments that are vying for more and more power is an uphill battle as it is and a developed country forcing an outright ban on encryption could provide the impetus to other nations including ours.Privacy activists should gear up to fight their wildest battle yet.
The Android M Developer Preview has received its first major update since it launched at Google I/O in May. The Android M Developer Preview 2 brings a wealth of bug fixes and performance improvements, in addition to some all new features, such as home screen rotate, plus a redesigned app drawer.

As you may recall, Android M introduced an alphabetized vertical scroll for the app drawer. The updated version is similar, but the letters on the left side have been removed, and the search bar at the top now says "search apps" on the left, rather than the magnifying glass symbol on the right.
Rotating home screen, better status bar
One of the other improvements is the ability to rotate the home screen to view it horizontally (which can be found in the home screen settings menu.) In addition, the status bar functionality has changed significantly and now lets you toggle items that appear there, such as turning the Wi-Fi or data on or off.
Network settings reset
Hidden away in the Backup and reset settings is another new feature called Network Settings Reset. This feature allows you to instantly wipe all of your network settings, including Wi-Fi connections, cellular data and Bluetooth connections. Pretty handy if you're offloading your device to someone else.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi held a meeting in Ufa, Russia on Friday during which matters of mutual interest were discussed.
Briefing on the meeting between the two premiers, Indian Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar said, “PM Nawaz reiterated his invitation to Modi to visit South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) Summit in Pakistan in 2016 and Modi accepted it.”
“The two leaders agreed India and Pakistan have a collective responsibility to ensure peace and promote development. To do so, they are prepared to discuss all outstanding issues.”
Further, the foreign secretary said a meetings will be held between DG BSF and DG Pakistan Rangers which will be followed by meetings between DGMOs.
“A meeting in New Delhi will be held between two NSAs to discuss all issues connected to terrorism,” he added.
“Both sides have agreed to enable a mechanism for facilitating religious tourism,” the Indian foreign secretary said, while addressing a joint press conference with Pakistan’s foreign secretary.
“Both sides agreed to discuss ways and means to expedite Mumbai case trial,” Jasihankar added.
Responding to a question whether he is happy with the meeting, PM Nawaz said, “Yes.”
Further, Pakistan and India agreed to release fishermen detained on both sides of the border along with their boats within 15 days, as per a draft released by the foreign secretaries of both countries detailing on Nawaz, Modi meeting.
The two leaders held a meeting which lasted for over an hour on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Russia.
As per reports, premier’s senior aide Sartaj Aziz and Special Assistant to PM on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi were present at the meeting.
Before the start of the meeting, the two leaders are said to have shaken hands with each other. This is the first meeting between the two leaders since Nawaz attended Modi’s swearing-in ceremony in May 2014.
Pakistan hopes that the meeting between PM Nawaz and Modi will help defuse tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. Terming the scheduled meeting between the two leaders “a positive development”, Foreign Office spokesperson Qazi Khalilullah said the meeting was likely to have “a positive impact on the bilateral relations at regional and international levels”.
The Nawaz, Modi meeting came in the backdrop of tensions between the two neighbours that had emerged after a series of controversial statements issued by the Indian premier against Pakistan.
Modi had not only accused Pakistan of fuelling terrorism in India but also admitted that India had played a part in the break-up of Pakistan in 1971.
Politicians on both sides of the border exchanged a volley of accusations hither and thither after Modi issued the statements.
Earlier, before the meeting took place, Indian officials said they were looking at a ‘substantive’ dialogue with Islamabad with focus on terrorism and the release of Mumbai blasts alleged mastermind Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi. Pakistani sources said the focus would be on Kashmir, according to the Times of India.
Further, on Thursday night PM Nawaz met Modi at a dinner hosted by Russian President Vladimir Putin, a day ahead of their bilateral talks.
Both leaders exchanged pleasantries and spoke briefly when they came face-to-face at a dinner hosted for leaders of five BRICS countries and 10 SCO nations in Ufa, according to Hindustan Times.
BRICS is an association of five major emerging economies – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
Relations with Pakistan top China’s agenda: President Xi
After his meeting with Modi, PM Nawaz met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Ufa.
“Relations with Pakistan are very high on China’s agenda,” Jinping told Nawaz.
“China wants to maintain close ties with Pakistan and is looking forward to President Mamnoon’s upcoming visit to China,” he added.
The Chinese president invited the prime minister to attend the SCO meeting taking place in Beijing this year.
Reciprocating the sentiments, PM termed friendship with China a cornerstone of Pakistan’s foreign policy. He appreciated his personal commitment to materialise China, Pakistan Economic Corridor.
Further, he thanked Xi for the support China has been extending to Pakistan in the country’s effort to become a full member of the SCO.

Yahoo has come up with a new strategy that could help revive the struggling Internet company's fortunes: give users the chance to win cash.
Yahoo launched a daily fantasy sports service on Wednesday, tapping into a new revenue source that could expand its presence in the multi-billion dollar fantasy sports industry.
The new service, called Yahoo Sports Daily Fantasy, allows users to win cash rewards by participating in daily fantasy sports games. Yahoo has long been one of the leaders in fantasy sports in which users compete throughout the duration of a season for fun and for bragging rights. But it's never allowed users to win money on its games until today.
"Today, we're taking the game to the next level and giving fans what they've always wanted — the chance to compete with their friends and win cash, everyday. With today's launch, Yahoo becomes the first major sports site and the only technology company of its scale to offer its own Daily Fantasy experience," Yahoo wrote in a statement.
The new daily fantasy league is already up and running on Yahoo. It's also available through a standalone iOS app, or through any mobile browser, it said.
Fantasy sports are online games that allow users to put together their own imaginary teams comprised of real players, and win points based on the players' real-game performances. It's one of the most popular online activities with a user base of roughly 56 million in the US and Canada alone, and is estimated to be at least a $4 billion industry, according to STATS.
The new fantasy sports games could help attract new users to Yahoo, a 21-year-old Internet pioneer which has struggled to attract users and advertisers at the same rate as competitors such as Facebook and Google.
While sports gambling is illegal in all but four states, placing money on fantasy sports is considered legal in most states because of a law called the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. The law basically classifies fantasy sports as a "game of skills," not a "game of chance," which has spawned the creation of multiple daily fantasy sports sites, including the near $1 billion-valued DraftKings and FanDuel.
Today's news shouldn't come as a complete surprise to those who've followed Yahoo in the past. During her last earnings call, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer said users spend more than 30 billion minutes on Yahoo's fantasy sports sites annually, and hinted at a summer launch of a daily fantasy service.
"Normally we do not announce products before launch but this has been such an area of interest for our fantasy players and our investors that we wanted to announce that we have a new daily fantasy offering in the works that will launch this summer," she said.

To avoid last-minute surprises and frustration, here are our top-5 tips to get you ready for the shift:
1. Reserve your free upgrade to Windows 10.
To select this option, simply click on the small Windows icon on the the taskbar. When the upgrade is ready, you will get a notification to schedule the installation – the build will have been already downloaded automatically, so the final installation will go faster.
2. Back up all your important files.
Take care of your files before the Windows 10 launch date. Do this before upgrading, either via an external hard drive or OneDrive. Your files are saved on the hard drive of your device by default, but it’s always good to have a plan B in case something goes wrong.
3. Make sure your antivirus protection is up to date.
Windows will uninstall and then reinstall the latest version of your antivirus software, preserving your settings prior to the upgrade. If your subscription is out of date, it will enable Windows Defender.
4. Prepare to say goodbye.
Media Center won’t be available on Windows 10. Instead, Microsoft will provide a free DVD-playback app for Windows Media Center users. Also, some apps that came from your OEM may be removed prior to the upgrade installation. For more details and to avoid any unwelcome surprises, check out the Windows specs for the upgrade.
5. Set aside an hour for the installation.
That is, if you reserve your upgrade before the Windows 10 launch date. If not, count on needing some extra time for downloading the build, as well. In any case, you won’t be able to use your device during the upgrade process, so plan accordingly – you might want to run the upgrade overnight.
The South Korean tech giant Samsung has recently revealed that the second quarter profits of the company are observed to be lower than expectations of its latest Galaxy S6 flagship and hence the operating income declined 4% for the Q2 of 2015 to $6.1 billion by the end of June.
Despite opening several new production line to meet the demand, the reason for the declined sales is said to be the shortage in the supply of these devices alongside the meek demand from the major markets across the world, as said by Samsung.
The sales of Samsung Galaxy S6 flagship clocked in at $42.24 billion (48 trillion won) however, the expectations were around $46.64 billion (53 trillion won) from 37 analysts compiled by Bloomberg.
The overall decline observed in sales is 8.3% as compared to the same quarter of 2014.
It means that the lastest and the most premium flagship by Samsung did not manage to attract the customers probably due to its competitor’s iPhone 6 and other smartphones offered by different brands.
Commenting about the Galaxy S6 declined sales, an equity analyst at HMC Investment Securities Co, Greg Roh stated that:
“S6 didn’t sell as well as the market had hoped for, partly because of continued outperforming of iPhones combined with the supply constraint. The sales sharply missed the market expectation, which implies that overall technology industry demand for smartphones, TVs and PCs is weakening. It doesn’t matter how competitive you are if overall demand is weak. Third-quarter earnings will likely be similar to the second quarter.”
Moreover, the share price of Samsung which has fallen 7.2% this year, went down further by 0.8% recently after the announcement of the earnings estimate.

In face of strict competition, Samsung has announced a new starter-range smartphone called the Galaxy V Plus. The successor to the last year’s Galaxy V comes for $82 and has just the features to make it usable.
The display at the front is a 4” capacitive TFT LCD panel with WVGA (800 x 480) resolution. The phone follows the usual design language of Samsung. Dual-SIM support is found here by default and every phone will come with two micro-SIM slots.
Underneath, the phone comes with a 1.2 Ghz dual-core processor, 512 MB RAM and 4GB internal storage, out of which approx. 2 GB will be usable. Those are surely unflattering figures but the phone is surely not trying to prove itself as a power-performer either. There is a microSD card slot to expand it further.
At the back is a 3 megapixel camera with 480p video recording at 30 fps, along with a complimentary front-facing shooter which comes with a 480p camera too. The phone comes with 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 for connectivity. At the back is a 1,500 mAh battery to power.
The Galaxy V Plus will be available in two colors: Black and White. As said it will retail for $82 which is just about fine for a branded phone which runs Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box (and TouchWiz on top of it).
For that price, it will face stiff competition from the likes of Microsoft Lumia and other Chinese brands and we’re not sure if it has the tools to compete. So this, or the QMboile A1?
When Apple revealed the 'Force Touch' feature for the iPhone 6S, we mused that it could make the phone a Galaxy S6 killer. The latest iPhone 6S leaks, however, suggest that this feature will impact the phone's design, raising the question of whether Apple is abandoning its design principles to become more of a ‘gadget’ phone like Samsung’s flagships.
This week, Engadget Japan revealed what appeared to be a diagram of the upcoming iPhone 6S, showing the phone to be 0.2 mm thicker than the iPhone 6. This may not sound like much, but take into account Apple's design-focused ethos and the fact that this would make the iPhone 6S the first 'S' iPhone thicker than its non-'S' variant, and it's indicative of a risky shift in the company's thinking.
The reason for the extra girth on the iPhone 6S is not to accommodate a larger battery as you'd expect, but to include the 'Force Touch' feature - which makes the screen pressure-sensitive. If implemented well, this could be a winning feature for the iPhone 6S. If there were even three different degrees of pressure you could apply, then it'd seriously expand the phone's usability - with extra gestures such as 'hard-swiping', or 'soft-tapping'. And just imagine how handy it'd be for improving iffy mobile game controls.
However, if Force Touch works in a similar way to how it does on the Apple Watch (i.e. very basic), then the iPhone 6S could be in trouble.
The Galaxy S6 Edge has a fingerprint sensor, heartrate monitor, IR blaster and Edge display in a 7 mm chassis - 0.1mm thinner than the rumored iPhone 6S width. Of those Galaxy S6 Edge features, the iPhone 6S is only expected to have a fingerprint sensor - and its own Force Touch tech, of course.
If Force Touch is a flop and, as expected, tips the iPhone 6S thickness over that of the S6 Edge, then that will have big implications for Apple's reputation as the world's foremost smartphone designer. Crucially, the added thickness of the iPhone 6S, for the sake of a single throwaway feature, would say to the world that Apple is incapable of doing what Samsung did - making a feature-packed phone without having a negative impact on its design.
While the iPhone has one of the most loyal consumer bases in the world, Apple is pushing the boat out by sacrificing some of its design slickness to throw in a feature that could make tech enthusiasts take note of it, like they currently do of the Galaxy S6 - and particularly the S6 Edge.
If Force Touch turns out to be a revolutionary feature, then no one will pay heed to the extra chubbiness of the iPhone 6S. However, if it turns out to be superfluous, then Apple will have sacrificed its philosophy of sleek, minimal design to play and lose at Samsung's game - which is to impress people with countless gadgety features while maintaining a svelte chassis.
I, for one, hope that Apple pulls it off, and that Force Touch becomes a feature that smartphones aspire to, rather than a failed gimmick.

Nine months back, Google announced its plans to flood markets with cheap smartphones with guaranteed software support with Android One. Today, that dream has been realized in Pakistan with the arrival of the first Android One smartphone in the country, the QMobile A1.
To make the dream a possibility, Google and Pakistan’s largest smartphone company got together to make the first ever Android One phone which will be available in retail as opposed to e-commerce in order to achieve more success.

But before going into the features, lets discuss the most notable aspect: the price. At 11,500 PKR, it is not only one of the most-affordable smartphones out there, but also among the most usable and smooth in its price range.
The phone itself is pretty standard affair. The specs are almost the same as those found in the first batch of Android One smartphones. You get a 4.5” IPS capacitive display at the front, boasting FWGA (854 x 480) resolution with 218 ppi. Underneath, you get a 1.3 Ghz quad-core processor of unspecified SoC (most probably MediaTek MT6582 with Cortex-A7 CPU) with 1 GB RAM (thankfully) and 8 GB internal storage, expandable by up to 32 GB.
At the back lies a 5 megapixel camera with LED Flash, along with a 2 megapixel shooter at the front. 3G and Dual-SIM support comes by default on the A1, which is powered by a 1,700 mAh battery.
The highlight of the initiative is the OS itself. The phone runs on stock Android 5.1.1 Lollipop straight from the box, with software updates for at least 2 years guaranteed, including the upcoming Android version M.
QMobile A1 will have 2 years of support which means it will promptly be updated to Android M
Google’s Material Design comes with a better-looking interface and comes with up to twice as much performance, battery saver mode, smarter notifications and quick access to data controls with Lollipop.
The phone follows the minimum hardware requirements set by Google itself. Costing just 11,500 PKR, the phone is in the reach of most people and provides an experience which is comparable with much higher-end handsets. That too, manufactured by a company with a history of bloated software and archaic Android versions.
